Nicole Mogil is a proud heart mom! Her son, Gavin, has been a source of inspiration and motivation in this journey and she is thrilled to share her story as she spreads awareness about congenital heart defects (CHDs) and helps families with children affected by CHDs.
Nicole is a former elementary school teacher (kindergarten and first grade) with a Bachelor’s Degree in general and special education and a Master’s Degree in literacy. She has worked in the East Islip, Sayville, Farmingdale, and Smithtown school districts. It was her 6th year teaching in the Smithtown Central School District when Gavin arrived. Since then, she has pursued the efforts of Gavin’s Got Heart full-time.
Gavin’s Got Heart was created in December 2012 in an effort to help families with children affected by CHDs. Since its formation, Gavin’s Got Heart has been able to help local heart families by offering them financial assistance. Nicole actively speaks at Rotary and PTA meetings in an effort to spread CHD awareness. She has worked with the American Heart Association and Mended Little Hearts to support passage of CHD Awareness Week in New York State as well as legislation requiring all newborns to receive pulse oximetry screenings before discharge, which may unveil undetected CHDs. She has held the position of Educational Coordinator for the Long Island chapter of Mended Little Hearts and has been appointed to the Family Advisory Committee for Winthrop University Hospital.
Nicole is thrilled to have the unbelievable support of the Gavin’s Got Heart board members. They each bring a wealth of knowledge to this cause and are such a tremendous part of the success of Gavin’s Got Heart! Please don’t hesitate to contact Nicole at nicole@gavinsgotheart.org.
